Therapy, coaching, and peer support

Different kinds of support serve different purposes. Compare the role, boundaries, and credentials behind each listing.

Therapy: clinical care

Psychotherapy can help people address distressing emotions, thoughts, and behaviors. NIMH describes it as treatment commonly provided by licensed mental health professionals. A therapist's relevant experience, treatment approach, and professional authorization matter alongside the title they use.

Ask about training, confidentiality and its limits, fees, and the proposed plan. If you want assessment or treatment for a mental health concern, check that the person is appropriately qualified and able to provide the service where you are.

Coaching: clarify the scope

A coaching offer may focus on goals, routines, decisions, or practical adjustment. Ask the coach to explain exactly what they provide and what they do when a client needs clinical care. A coaching certificate alone does not establish a mental health license.

The International Coaching Federation provides guidance on referring clients when their needs exceed a coach's competence. Be cautious about offers to diagnose, treat trauma, or guarantee recovery without a clear clinical qualification and explanation of the service being offered.

Peer support: shared experience

Peer support builds on lived experience and mutual understanding. SAMHSA describes roles such as sharing resources, building community, and supporting personal goals. Its guidance concerns behavioral health peer services; informal groups for people affected by cultic environments may have different training and oversight.

Ask who facilitates the group, how privacy is handled, whether participation is voluntary, and what happens if someone needs more support. Other members cannot guarantee confidentiality just because a meeting is described as private.

Choose for your current needs

These options can complement one another. They are not interchangeable, and one person may hold several roles. Ask which role they are acting in, what protections apply, and how concerns can be raised. A listing's category, paid placement, or warm introduction does not establish suitability for you.
